IrAero Flight 103 was a passenger flight which overran the runway at Ignatyevo Airport near Blagoveshchensk, Russia, on 8 August 2011. Twelve of the 36 people on board were injured. The aircraft involved, an Antonov An-24, was operating IrAero's scheduled domestic service from Chita Kadala Airport, Khabarovsk to Ignatyevo. The aircraft overran the runway by 200 metres (220 yd) on landing and was written off.

 

Aircraft

The accident aircraft was an Antonov An-24, registration RA-46561, manufacturer's serial number 67310609. The aircraft had been manufactured in 1976.

Accident

The aircraft landed at Blagoveshchensk's Ignatyevo Airport at 14:20 local time (04:20 Zulu Time). Thunderstorms were reported in the area at the time. The METAR in force at the time of the accident was "UHBB 080400Z 19004MPS 3100 -TSRA OVC016CB 23/22 Q1006 NOSIG RMK QFE737/0983 36290540". The aircraft overran the end of the runway coming to rest some 200 metres (220 yd) later with the landing gear collapsed and the left wing detached from the aircraft. Earlier reports said that of the five crew and 31 passengers on board, nine passengers and three crew were injured.According to the final accident report, 4 passengers received serious injuries, 3 received minor injuries, and 29 had no injuries. Of the crew, two had minor injuries and three had no injuries.

Investigation

On 9 August, the Interstate Aviation Committee (Russian: Межгосударственный авиационный комитет (МАК)) of the Commonwealth of Independent States opened an investigation into the accident, with B G Rafikov in charge. Although both the Cockpit Voice Recorder and the Flight Data Recorder were damaged in the accident, good data were retrieved from both instruments.

Aftermath

On 17 August, IrAero's Air Operator's Certificate was suspended by Federal Service for Supervision of Transport (Rostransnadzor) as a consequence of this and other runway overruns incurred by the airline.
