Germanwings Airbus A-320 , registration number D-AIPX , performing flight 4U-9525 from Barcelona–El Prat Airport in Spain to Düsseldorf Airport in Germany. The flight was operated by Germanwings, a low-cost carrier owned by the German airline Lufthansa
The aircraft, an Airbus A320-211, had 144 passengers and six crew members on board

Shortly after reaching cruise altitude of 38,000 ft (11,600 m), the captain left the cockpit to use the toilet. The co-pilot, locked the cockpit door and initiated a controlled descent that continued until the aircraft hit a mountainside in the French Alps
The last pilot communication to air traffic control was: “Direct IRMAR, thank you, good day.”
The crash was deliberately caused by the co-pilot, who had previously been treated for suicidal tendencies and declared unfit to work by his doctor. Co Pilot kept this information from his employer and instead reported for duty
The crash was recorded by a radar and a cockpit voice recorder (CVR) that was recovered from the wreckage. The CVR captured the sounds of the captain trying to break into the cockpit and passengers screaming in the final moments before impact
All 150 people on board were killed in the crash. It was the deadliest aviation incident in France since the 2000 Concorde crash and the third-deadliest aviation incident in Germany behind the 1972 Königs Wusterhausen disaster and the 1988 Lockerbie bombing
The crash prompted aviation authorities to implement new recommendations that required two authorised personnel in the cockpit at all times. However, some airlines later dropped this rule due to operational and security concerns
